Geographic Features: Location: Situated on Big Lake, which is part of the West Branch of the St. Croix River system. Big Lake itself is the second-largest lake in Washington County, covering approximately 10,305 to 10,444 acres. Waterfront: The island boasts 2000 feet of private waterfront, featuring sandy and pebble beaches. Topography: The island is covered with towering pine, oak, and maple trees, along with high-bush blueberries. There are also lovely trails throughout the island. Water Bodies: Big Lake is known for its island-dotted waters and connection to Grand Lake Stream, a 3-mile-long waterway that flows from West Grand Lake into Big Lake. The Little River itself is a short river (7.1 miles long) that also flows into Big Lake. Natural Environment: Flora: The island is heavily wooded with a variety of mature trees, including pine, oak, and maple, and features high-bush blueberries. Fauna: The entire region surrounding Big Lake and Grand Lake Stream is renowned as an "outdoorsman's paradise." Big Lake is particularly famous for its smallmouth bass fishing, but also contains landlocked salmon, lake trout (togue), lake whitefish, rainbow smelt, white perch, yellow perch, chain pickerel, and various minnow species. The area is also rich in wildlife, supporting hunting activities (especially deer in the managed deeryard). Structures on the Island: Little River Island is developed with a rustic, self-sufficient setup, including: Two rustic cabins: A main cabin with a large stone wood-burning fireplace, kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom, and a guest cabin with a wood-burning cooking stove in the kitchen, a living room with a Jotul wood stove, a bedroom, and a large deck. Two docks. A pump house for pressurized lake-drawn water to each cabin. A propane hot water heater. An outdoor shower. A large storage shed. A separate 16x16 platform deck. A generator out-building. The island provides a serene setting where one can enjoy nature, with specific spots like a "sunrise bench" and a "sunset bench" designed to take in the scenic views.
